Expert Q&A

By Bruce Salzinger, D.C., CCSP
Chiropractor

My 14-year-old son plays football. He complains alot about his knees bothering him. Can a chiropractor help with knees? I don't know if I should pull him out of football or not.

I have seen literally thousands of young sports active children over the years. Aches and pains all over the body come with the territory. All chiropractors have been thoroughly schooled on the examination and treatment of the spine. Some chiropractors like myself have pursued additional education in sports medicine and extremity adjusting. This enhanced education gives us the tools to properly diagnose and treat problems such as those you describe.

I would suggest you find a Doctor of Chiropractic local to you and ask does the doctor have extensive sports and extremity training background. Once you find the right doctor I would make an appointment for a thorough history and examination. The doctor can then prescribe the best course of treatment. I wouldn't rush to pull him out of what is probably a great experience for him on many levels. Most of the NBA, NFL and PGA players for example all use chiropractic care. Your son will benefit too.
