Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

My daughter is 13, and she has not started her period yet. She says that all her friends have, and that she is the only one she knows who hasn't. It is becoming a serious stressor in her life. Isn't this normal? How can I help her?

The age of onset of menstruation has dropped 4 months every 10 years for the past one hundred years so that onset is now common at age 12 or 2 years after breast budding. It's a built in clock and should not be accelerated. Continue assurance and reassurance. How can you help? Tell her how it was for you!
