Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

My daughter is 12 years old and has started her period. In her Summer Day Program, they go to the pool every Monday. I always thought that if you are in water (pool or bath tub) your bleeding would temporarily stop. Is this true? My daughter uses only pads and cannot bring herself to use a tampon just yet.

No, the period flow does not stop. Depending on the level of bleeding, she can apply a fresh thin mini-pad before swimming or get permission to sit it out.
