Expert Q&A

By Eve Eliot

I think my teenaged daughter may be bulimic. What signs should I look for?

If you suspect your daughter is purging her food by vomiting, notice if she goes quickly into the bathroom after eating. Notice whether her knuckles are beginning to look red and irritated. Ask yourself if she seems to be eating more but is not gaining weight. Also, note whether she is emotionally more distant and keeps to herself. These are the things you may be noticing that has led you to this conclusion.

Other signs are noticeable by the dentist, as vomiting often affects the tooth enamel. Also, the glands just at the edge of the jaw tend to swell.
