Expert Q&A

I am almost a senior in high school and I want to have a healthy lifestyle but I can't afford it. So how can I afford to eat and exercise without doing it with surgery or diet pills?

Dear Senior in high school,

I am assuming that you are needing some support, and that you have the belief that surgery, therapies and other costly procedures are necessary to receive that support. This is not the case at all, however. Even people who can afford surgery often have trouble changing their eating/exercise/lilfesyyle habits. Even after the surgery, they are overeating and/or not taking care of themselves!

So the best thing you can do for yourself is to:

  • Get a yoga DVD out of the library and watch it. You don't even have to get on the floor and actually DO the yoga at first. You can just pop it into the CD player, lay down on the sofa and watch it. Learn it a bit. Breathe with it. Find motivation within yourself to WANT to participate in your own health. This motivation will come. Give yourself some time.

  • Find a book, CD or a DVD about breathing exercises. Breathing correctly is the single most powerful first step you can take in the direction you want to go. Because inappropriate eating is usually about anxiety, and because breathing is the very best calming method, I strongly encourage you to practice breathing! It's simple, portable and free!

  • Realize that you are worth the time and effort it takes to give yourself some attention. You do not need to pay other people for that.

    Good luck!
