Melody's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

March 7, 2000

Since I’m off work now, I figure I will have lots more time to write! What a concept! I mean, without the demanding full-time job, it’s a piece of cake? Right?! Wrong?!

Suddenly, I’m AVAILABLE! Take today for example.

Because Stephen is 18 now, he got his $5,000 inheritance DIRECTLY. That is, he gets to do whatever he wants with the money! That’s OK, but kind of scary because where is it written that once a teenager turns 18, they are suddenly responsible adults? Stephen is a great kid, don’t get me wrong! However, he still habitually loses his picture ID and still hasn’t figured out exactly what he wants to DO with his life. I asked him about college, and he mentioned that he wanted to take a guitar class and maybe a poetry class, and possibly a class to learn to write music, and maybe he would start his own band or something! This kid is getting all this money!

Anyway, Stephen asked me to drive him to the bank to deposit this check. So, we jumped into my brand new 2000 Toyota Corolla, maroon, five-speed on the floor, which I purchased right after I quit my job (heheheehe!), and we headed toward the bank. On the way, Stephen said he just remembered that his friend Jamie who worked as a chef in the Los Altos Hills needed to be picked up, and it wasn’t too far out of the way. Jamie’s mom usually picked him up, but her car broke down.

So, we drove up windy roads to this club and picked up Steve’s friend Jamie. We drove Jamie to his house, and as I began to pull away, Jamie’s mom, Sue, came running out and asked if I’d take her to her husband’s job site, and it wasn’t very far away. So, I told her to hop in, and we drove all the way through Mountain View to this job site, and then Sue asked if I’d wait just a couple of minutes because she needed a ride home. So, I waited because I know it’s a drag to be stranded without a car.

Sue finally hopped back into the car, and I took her back home. Finally, we’ re off again headed towards the bank with Stephen’s check! As we cruise down El Camino, Stephen sees a friend of his.

Stephen sticks his head out the window and yells, "Hey, Billy! Do you need a ride?"

Of course Billy needs a ride, and so does his friend Cory, so they hop into the back seat of my nice new car, and will I please make a right turn on Grant Road BEFORE going to the bank? And where they go isn’t very far away.

So, there I am cruising down El Camino in my new car with a carload of teenage boys. And, to think, I’m supposed to be at home WRITING!

We finally made it to the bank, and it took the brand new customer service representative over an hour to open a new account for my son, Stephen, who lost his picture ID, and only had a birth certificate and social security number.
