Carma's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

November 29, 2000

Alec bought his father and me tickets to a "new and upcoming" dinner theater. The tickets were an early Christmas present as the performance is this Friday. We will be dining on braised pork, twice-baked potatoes, seasoned corn or green beans (our choice), tea, coffee and New York-style cheesecake while watching a marvelous performance of "The Madrigal Dinner" -- in which my son plays the king.

The middle school Alec attends decided to try something "fresh" this year. They have replaced the standard plays and choir performances with an evening of dinner and music. They will be holding three each year; one for the Christmas season, one in the spring and one for the closing of the school year. Alec is really excited about the "fresh" idea because he says that now he can "combine both the choir solos and roles in the plays into one." He loves doing both choir and drama, but the practices and rehearsals do tend to take up a lot of his afternoons. This way he is still able to participate in both without having to choose one activity to leave behind. The bad part is, this is his last year at the middle school. Next year he will be a high school freshman.

So, Alec is taking full advantage of his last year by trying out for any and all parts that he can. He has the lead male part in this performance as well as a musical solo, and plans to try out for both the lead in the spring play (the kids are hoping to do "Grease," "Our Town" or "Fame") and the lead for the end of the year program (the kids are hoping to do "Hair" or "Death of a Salesman"). He is a very good actor and can carry a tune with the best of them. I'm hoping for both him and myself that he will get the leads in these productions as well so he can take full advantage of his last year and be able to look back with pride.

But, in all honesty, it may be a good thing this is his last year -- puberty is coming on quick. And we all know what that can do to a baritone voice.
