Joining the working population and first paycheck!
October 10, 2006
I have been meaning to sit down and write an update for the past several weeks, but I just never get to that point.
When I first come to iP I always check out the boards and by the time i get that done I'm needing somewhere else by someone in the house.
Anyway, as the tag line states, JOSHUA HAS GOTTEN A JOB!
A little over over a month ago our neighbor, which is Joshua's age and works at the same place, told us they were hiring again. It took a good week, but I finally remembered that we needed to go to the web-site and fill out an application. A couple weeks went by and one night about three weeks ago the phone rang and it was a number I didn't recognize, it was an out of area number and I didn't recognize the name either. When I answered the female on the other end asked to speak with Joshua. I quickly went up to the boys room where Joshua was on the computer and with my hand over the phone, I quickly questioned Joshua about the caller, he had no idea who it was.
Joshua answered and said yes, and then it was a long silence and he had no expression on his face. Not knowing who it was or what the call was about I hung around to see what the
outcome was. Joshua answered a few more yes's and a couple no's and some I think so and
several other things, then looked to me and said do you mind if I close. Somehow
I quickly figured out that it was someone about the job.
I asked what time would that be, and he in turn asked the caller the same question,
he replied 10 o'clock, and I said thats fine.
So the call ended and Joshua said I have an interview Thursday at 4, or maybe it was 4:30. So I then asked for the details and he said that was about
it, just telling him a little about the place and how it works and just what he
asked about closing. He seemed to be a little excited at this point.![]()
So, it was Thursday and Joshua came home from school and needed on the computer to do homework, which I obliged. I reminded him it was only about an hour before we needed to be leaving for him to get to his interview. He said he knew, which is the answer for everything, that or I don't care, even if he doesn't know what it is.
It was time for us to go and of course DH wasn't home form work yet, so I loaded
up the two youngest kids and we head to the store where Joshua would be working
if they hired him. As we pulled up to the store I asked Joshua how long the interview
was supposed to last, he said he didn't know. Well, you know if you don't drive
and someone is going to have to be waiting on you, it would have been nice of
them to give a time frame or for him to ask them about it. Don't you think?
Oh, well as usual, Joshua doesn't know what is going on.
Not knowing how long things will take I opt to park the car, its 80 some degree's and the sun is shining, but there is a cool breeze, so we just sit and wait. I had told Joshua we would go to Michaels craft store while we waited, but quickly decided to just hang tight there so I might see if they needed me for anything, or if he had to fill out paper work and needed me to answer any questions, which ended up being just what happened. Joshua saw us sitting in the parking lot across from the store and came out to ask me for some information and phone numbers.
I really am glad we stuck around during the interview. The manager and owner took the kids, there were 7 there for the interview, out front of the store where they have a few table and chairs for customers to sit and eat and conducted the interview. It was the most entertaining interview I have ever seen. Each one of the applicants had to answer scenario questions, the they had to get up and perform a little skit or tell a nursery rhyme or tell a joke. The kids did things like the chicken dance and telling jokes, and Joshua did "I'm a little teapot" which really surprised me. I guess that just proved how much he really wanted the job! They also had the kids get into 2 groups and look over some paper, I guess of song they like them to sing as they are waiting on customers or get a tip, etc. After looking over the paper they had the groups make up their own song to the tune of a popular children's song, like bingo, she'll be coming round the mountain, and things like that. The interview took about an hour total and Joshua was then free to go.
The following day around 11:30 I got a phone call and the ID said it was the
same number of the mysterious call a few days prior. I answered and once again
it was that female voice, so I knew who it was, but she was quick to tell me who
she was and that she was the owner of the store. She told me that they would like
to hire Joshua, that he seemed to be a very pleasant and polite young man. I think
it also helped them decide to hire him because he is friends with the neighbor
boy that works their. She actually said I know he is friends with "D", so I'm
hoping that maybe they are "cut from the same loaf of bread".
How funny, but I guess that would be a way of saying that she hoped they were
a somewhat alike since they are friends. I guess "D" is a really good worker,
and polite. He really does seem to be a good kid all around, so hopefully Joshua
will live up to their expectations the have of him. So the conversation ended
with her saying that if I could please take Joshua down to the store after school
to fill out some paperwork that would be good.
So, after Joshua got home from school I gave him the news, and as usual, he didn't
show much emotions or enthusiasm about the whole situation. He did a bit of home
work he had and then changed his clothes to the same thing he wore to the interview,
funny thing is, that is the way they dress for work, and then add a hat and apron
to it, so Joshua just fit in. In fact, they wanted him to hang around and watch
one of the training video's. I ended up going to Michaels and looking around while
I waited. About an hour had gone by and I went back to Cold Stone to see what
was going on with Joshua. To my surprise they asked if he could stick around the
rest of the night and start working. I didn't see why he couldn't it was Friday
and no school the following day, so I just told him to call us when he was ready
to be picked up. Little did I know that call would never come and finally at 1
a.m. I called "D's" cell phone, he was working also, to find out what was going
on. Come to find out they had closed and "D" and the shift leader was giving Joshua
the 411 on everything about the store and how they do things. A crash course in
Job training if I ever knew one!![]()
It ended up that DH and I didn't have to go get Joshua, the neighbor brought him home, since he was already there to pick up his son. When Joshua got home he was all willing to share information about how neat he thought the job was, and how much he actually did to make the orders and keep supplies made up. He defiantly was thrown right into work that is for sure.
So, Joshua has gotten his first paycheck and gave it to me to put in his savings account. Grades have actually come up a bit and work seems to be going fine. At least Joshua isn't telling us any different and they keep scheduling him, so evidently he is doing ok.
There I will end for now. Thanks for reading and hopefully it will only be a
week or two at the most before I make it back to write again.![]()
Until Next Time................
God bless,
Bridgett and Joshua
