Dos and Don'ts for the Drop off - Don't let them see you cry. They're just as scared as you are.
- Don't be bossy.
- Tell them when they leave that they can always come back. Tell them, "It's not etched in stone. You can come home if you need to."
- Get there the night before arrival day. The first one in the room gets the best bed.
- Bring tools: a hammer, screwdriver and wrench. Those shelves you bought will need to be assembled when you get there.
- Make sure you send bathroom cleaners and a toilet brush.
- Relax. They'll adjust to their new situation, and they'll be fine without you.
- Don't call more than once a week. If your kid needs you, she'll call.
- Give them a semester to adjust without pressure and don't harp on their grades.
- Let them remember you smiling!
