Leaving Home

Tips to Help You Say Goodbye to Your College Freshman

By Laurie Nadel, Ph.D.

Pages:  1  2  3

Dos and Don'ts for the Drop off

  • Don't let them see you cry. They're just as scared as you are.
  • Don't be bossy.
  • Tell them when they leave that they can always come back. Tell them, "It's not etched in stone. You can come home if you need to."
  • Get there the night before arrival day. The first one in the room gets the best bed.
  • Bring tools: a hammer, screwdriver and wrench. Those shelves you bought will need to be assembled when you get there.
  • Make sure you send bathroom cleaners and a toilet brush.
  • Relax. They'll adjust to their new situation, and they'll be fine without you.
  • Don't call more than once a week. If your kid needs you, she'll call.
  • Give them a semester to adjust without pressure and don't harp on their grades.
  • Let them remember you smiling!
